A Brief History

Founded in the 12th century, Moscow grew from a small settlement into the capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow and later the Tsardom of Russia. Though the capital moved to Saint Petersburg in 1712, Moscow reclaimed its status in 1918 after the Russian Revolution. Today it remains the enduring symbol of Russian statehood and culture.
